Writing
At Woodloes Primary School, we are proud to be a Literacy Tree school, embracing a book-based, whole-school approach to literacy that empowers every child to become a confident reader, writer and communicator. We believe that writing is an essential life skill, enabling children to express themselves with clarity, creativity and confidence, and our writing curriculum is firmly rooted in the expectations of the National Curriculum.
Through Literacy Tree, high-quality children’s literature sits at the heart of learning. Each writing unit is built around an engaging, diverse and carefully chosen text, providing meaningful contexts for reading, writing and discussion. This literature-rich approach exposes pupils to ambitious vocabulary, rich language structures and a wide range of genres, inspiring them to write for real purposes and audiences.
Following the structured framework provided by Literacy Tree, teachers plan thematic units that support progression and consistency across year groups. Pupils move through a clear writing cycle of immersion, vocabulary exploration, planning, drafting, editing and publishing. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are taught both discretely and within the context of each unit, enabling pupils to apply their skills accurately and effectively in their writing.
Our partnership with Literacy Tree ensures a coherent and progressive approach to literacy across the school, supported by clear progression steps and assessment tools that enable staff to monitor and respond to pupils’ development. As a result, children at Woodloes are enthusiastic about stories, motivated to write, increasingly independent in crafting their ideas, and proud of the work they produce.
By combining the rigour of the National Curriculum with the power of high-quality literature, we nurture articulate, imaginative and confident writers who are well equipped to communicate their ideas and succeed in the next stage of their education.
